The Dalì exhibition in Florence: we were there.

Welcome to a world of dreams… amidst the sculptures of the world’s most famous surreal artist, the great Dalì.

Through May 25, you can visit “The Dalì Universe” at Palazzo Medici Riccardi (a minute walk from Piazza Duomo).
The show includes more than a thousand works, including sculptures, graphics, and furniture by the mad genius.

Right away, the first room shows off his melting clocks, a symbol of the slow flow of time and its relativity, never still. Continuing on, we come to his crutches, whose many meanings include supporting the body, both physically and spiritually because of the inadequacies we run into in life and lets us stay attached to the ground of the real world; a support for human values.

Next there are sculptures of women, such as the famous woman in flames whose body is full of drawers. In Dali’s works, drawers are almost always partly closed to represent the hidden secrets of feminine sensuality.
The exhibition continues in the palazzo’s evocative cloister where a large elephant draws everyone’s attention. The animal represents the distortion of space with its long, spindly legs in contrast to the concept of its powerful body. A human head is associated with a large snail that combines the hard (the shell) and the soft (the animal) in one. As a symbol of the slow passage of time, it is given a pair of wings (an angel) that lets it move.

We are almost disappointed when we realize that the exhibition is over, but going back towards the exit, we stop to linger over his works with our eyes full of the magic that emanates from them, leaving the beautiful palazzo still dazzled and dreaming.
