“Al Fresco” restaurant

As the days are growing longer and warmer, it feels great to be outdoors. So I decided to invite an old friend to dine out and the surest-bet was the wonderful terrace of Grand Hotel Minerva's "Al Fresco" restaurant! We were kindly offered glasses of prosecco by the friendly staff who brought us the menu to have something to pass the time while making our selection. The menu is easy to read and perfect for summer. The selection is varied yet simple (this is how I like my menus, as it lets

Lunching with the chef

Having accepted the invitation we received from the Lorenzo de' Medici (LdM) cooking school in Florence, at 1:00 pm on a Friday, I headed to the upper floor of the Mercato Centrale to take part in its “A pranzo con lo Chef” [Lunch with the chef] class.

We went into the kitchen where the courses are held at 16 stations for students and the chef behind the big counter in front. A video camera positioned above the counter records each step for making each recipe. The images are

Taste 2015: Recap

The Taste fair, in its tenth year, has comes to a close once again. For three days (March 7 to 9), Stazione Leopolda was bustling with 320 exhibitors from around the world. This year was once again a booming success and well attended. A spectacular installation greeted visitors at Stazione Leopolda's entrance, designed by Vetreria Etrusca (which also did the interiors), featuring 1,000 glass bottles lighting the fair's many stands. A wonderful installation was also seen at the culinary book

Taverna del Bronzino

Florence has more than its fair share of historic restaurants and La Taverna del Bronzino is a glorious example of one such establishment. The plaque above the entrance tells us that the restaurant is in the building that once belonged to Santi di Tito, a student of the artist Bronzino (Consul of Florence's Academy of the Arts of Drawing). We were immediately impressed by the helpfulness of the staff, especially Umberto, the owner, who showed us to our table. We had a drink to get started

Il Cibrèo Restaurant

In Florence, when you hear chef Fabio Picchi's name, it's like a guarantee of quality. Everyone knows his name! Since 1979, his restaurant “il Cibrèo” has gone from being a simple osteria to become virtually a place of worship for Florentines and tourists in pursuit of an incredible experience. I decided to treat myself to an evening of traditional dining, and some friends and I headed to Il Cibrèo Restaurant. This is a Restaurant with a capital "R". Alfonso and Cristina greeted us immediately

Florence is treating vegetarians right

Florence is renowned for its meat, of course — everyone knows about Florentine steak— but now it's starting to pay attention to the culinary needs of those who have opted for vegetarianism, or even veganism. Whether out of ethical or health concerns, more and more people are saying no to meat. And even those who do eat meat, maybe a couple times a week, enjoy being able to vary their diet with some "cruelty-free" dining. Many restaurants have added "veg-friendly" items on their menus to offer

Pescheria Di San Pietro: fresh fish and pasta

Everyone's going to Pescheria San Pietro… but not to buy a trout like its name — meaning fish shop in Italian — might suggest, but to have a nice meal of fresh pasta and great seafood. This new seafood restaurant opened about six months ago in Via Alamanni. Here fresh pasta is king on the menu. And, indeed, the monkfish ravioli and asparagus were exceptional. Before you come inside you can see where the fresh pasta is made, just in case you had any lingering doubt about the homemade

Our new tapas happy hour

Grand Hotel Minerva is chock full of surprises this summer. We did work on our rooftop to turn it into two beautiful terraces, called Pool & Solarium Terrace and Chiostri Terrace. We are happy to make some big announcements: our swimming pool now features more room for lounge chairs and a jacuzzi, and we have a brand new bar, 360 Three–Sixty. Our 360 bar was launched on June 24th for the Feast of St. John (Florence's patron saint), and our new tapas happy hour, Time4tapas kicked off
