In early October — the 1st to the 4th, to be exact — the European final of the GELATO FESTIVAL is slated to take place in Florence. About twenty master gelato makers from throughout Italy as well as Europe will meet in Florence for a challenge to the last bite!
The public will have a hand in choosing the winner by tasting and voting on their favorite gelato flavor.
You get to choose from a selection of flavors invented especially for the occasion.
You might try, for instance, the Mojito flavor, based on lime, water, rum, mint, and sugar, created by Leonardo La Porta of Turin’s Gelateria Miretti.
Or perhaps you fancy Crema Golosia (in the competition) by Giuseppe Filippone, from Gelateria Golosia — La Loggia, based on milk, cream, eggs, crunch candies, almonds, cherries, and lemon flavor.
Or perhaps a “classic,” such as Roman “stracciatella” (chocolate chip), in a version by Domenico Fargnoli of Gelateria Ge.Ra e Grand Café — Ostia, based on milk, cream, sugar, and dark chocolate.
The event is taking place on the magnificent panoramic terrace of Piazzale Michelangelo, affording a sweeping view of Florence.
To sample the various gelato flavors, just buy a Gelato Card, which lets you try five different flavors, as well as take classes at the School of Gelato to learn to make gelato. The Gelato Card “plus” version includes a bottle of water, a Pernigotti wafer, a coffee and a special edition shopping bag.
