Valentine’s Day in Florence

February is for lovers… have you ever imagined spending it in Florence? Florence is a city of romance — the place where love bloomed between Dante and his Beatrice, and every year thousands of couples choose it for their honeymoons or even as a place to marry. Where better to spend next February 14 with your special someone?

So what are Florence’s most romantic spots?

Before the sun goes down, we suggest a sweet, hand-in-hand stroll through the most magnificent, magical garden anywhere: Boboli with its timeless enchantment of flowers and butterflies. Boboli was built as the grand duke’s garden for Palazzo Pitti and is now an open-air museum dotted with magnificent sculptures and plant architecture so grand that they inspired royal gardens throughout Europe, including Versailles. It was built at the behest of Duchess Eleonora di Toleda, the young wife of Cosimo I de ‘ Medici. The two were very much in love, judging from the letters they exchanged when the Duke was away from Florence! Their passion is perfectly reflected in this garden and its many paths, secluded corners, fragrant bushes and fountains.

The small Rose Garden is another romantic gem, sloping from Piazzale Michelangelo down to San Niccolo’. Some of its benches seem to be placed specifically to give couples in love a place to declare their eternal love with the Duomo as their backdrop.

Dear lovers, let yourself be carried away by beautiful Florence’s romantic atmosphere and look out from Piazzale Michelangelo’s grandiose balcony to admire a full panorama of the splendor of Florence, by day or brilliantly lit up at night. You’ll be left breathless by the enchanting views and grand monuments in the heart of Florence.

Or if you want to keep on admiring Florence from on high, gaze at it from prestigious panoramic terraces (such as the Rinascente bar terrace in Piazza Repubblica, Forte Belvedere or the church of San Miniato a Monte). Seen from above, Florence turns into the sumptuous stage of a grand theater with you as first row audience members at its romantic theater!

To all those in-love men out there, don’t forget to get a little something for your woman. Women love surprise gifts! Head to the “Venchi” chocolate shop where she can delve into the heady aroma of chocolate and sample countless sweet delicacies. Chocolate is the secret to passion. What woman can resist it? Or you might go to “Ladurèe” — a little piece of Paris in Via della Vigna Nuova — a maker of some of most romantic, renowned sweets around: macarons.

As a true gentleman, you can’t but seal your love with a fine piece of jewelry. Take her to Ponte Vecchio, famous worldwide for its goldsmith shops that make truly fine handcrafted jewelry. Even Madonna stopped here to buy a gift…

Fashion lovers will enjoy a stroll on Via della Vigna Nuova, Via de’ Calzaiuoli and Via Tornabuoni, home to shops of major designers. Really, what could make a better St. Valentine’s Day gift than a Prada or Gucci bag? And, lest you forget, Tiffany’s is in Via Tornabuoni too…

So what are Florence’s most romantic restaurants?

Alle Murate in Via del Proconsolo: if you want to eat amidst original 14th-century frescoes depicting Dante and Masaccio. Giovanna Iorio’s cuisine will take you on a first-class culinary journey.

Filipepe in Via San Niccolo’: if you love fish, go find out how good its finest fish is, served in a quiet, sophisticated atmosphere.

Ristorante La Giostra in Borgo Pinti: a favorite for the jet set from around the world, opened by the Princes of Habsburg Lorraine! Give yourself over to the thrill of the ceiling’s infinite lights that make you feel like you’re under a starry sky.

Il Santo Bevitore in Santo Spirito: a one-time carriage depot, now a sophisticated restaurant, even mentioned in the Michelin Guide, it features low lighting, excellent wines and mouthwatering dishes for a truly special night out.

Wrapped in love’s magic, you might stop by the historic “Buca Lapi” restaurant and linger over a flawless candlelit dinner. The delicacies you’ll enjoy here are the fruit of the chef’s long experience and deep love of cooking.

For a truly romantic evening, make sure you don’t miss the unforgettable sunset from Ponte Vecchio where you can watch the sun’s bright colors grow sleepy and slip into the Arno. Sharing this moment with your love is as sweet and romantic as it gets. Such a wonderful gift nature bestows to the eyes of besotted couples entranced by its spectacle. An exclusive restaurant, the Golden View Open Bar is right on Ponte Vecchio, and offers up a spectacular view of Florentine Renaissance architecture, making it a perfect spot for a romantic dinner on this special day. The restaurant has three areas. The first and second areas are relaxing and intimate, overlooking the Ponte Vecchio. In the third room you will be regaled with jazz music and shows by national and international artists to enjoy your dinner in an original, exciting atmosphere.

After your special dinner, having finished the glasses and champagnes and chocolates, how about affording yourself the pleasure of an evening at the Odeon Cinema-Theater. Its atmosphere of retro romance, classical beauty and elegance will make your movie experience all the more memorable. The theater offers a lovely opportunity to sit next to each other and hold hands while you enjoy the movie, nicely relaxed and comfortable.

And finally, every good fairy tale needs its happy ending! Have an unforgettable experience going through Florence in a carriage at night! The city’s lights will lead you amidst the old city’s finest monuments…

Spend your St. Valentine’s Day here and your love will be forever.

Romantic Florence — a destination full of enchanting sites — will pamper you on St. Valentine’s, giving you the gift of a wonderfully unique experience to remember with your significant other.
