Continue reading »]]> I consider Palazzo Strozzi is one of the most beautiful Italian Renaissance palazzi. It’s majestic, but still fits well between the Piazza Strozzi and Via Tornabuoni. Its charming interior courtyard is a nice place to meet friends and enjoy a break after visiting the many exhibits that the Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi puts on.

Right now you can enjoy ”The Spring of the Renaissance”: an exhibition of 140 masterpieces, mostly sculptures, from around the world. This extraordinary event is in collaboration with the Musée du Louvre.

The exhibition is on the palazzo’s first floor. It begins with a rediscovery of antiquity (masterpieces of the ’200-’300), and continues through its numerous rooms to leads visitors to explore the splendors of the Florentine Renaissance.

La Strozzina, on the palazzo’s underground floor, is currently hosting another exhibition: ”An idea of beauty“. Visitors are taken straight from the 15th century to the new millennium. The works of eight international artists let us rediscover and recognize beauty, putting it in relation with reality. Paintings, installations, sculptures, pictures and videos make the public actively participate in this idea of ​​art.

Definitely worth seeing … a leap from the past to the present that will leave visitors breathless!

Continue reading »]]> Considero Palazzo Strozzi uno tra i più bei palazzi rinascimentali italiani, imponente ma allo stesso tempo ben collocato tra l’omonima Piazza Strozzi e via Tornabuoni. L’affascinante cortile interno può essere considerato un piacevole luogo di ritrovo, dove godere di una sosta dopo aver visitato le innumerevoli mostre che la Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi organizza.

In questo periodo è possibile ammirare “La Primavera del Rinascimento”: una mostra che raccoglie 140 capolavori, per lo più sculture, provenienti da tutto il mondo. È un evento straordinario, in collaborazione con il Museè du Louvre.

La mostra, situata al primo piano del palazzo, inizia con una riscoperta dell’antico (capolavori del ‘200-‘300) e, attraverso le varie sale in cui è suddivisa, conduce il visitatore ad esplorare le bellezze del Rinascimento fiorentino.

La Strozzina, al piano inferiore del palazzo, ospita invece un’altra mostra: “Un’idea di bellezza”. Il visitatore viene  letteralmente trasportato dal ‘400 al nuovo millennio. Le opere degli otto artisti internazionali ci fanno riscoprire e riconoscere la bellezza mettendola in relazione con la realtà. I dipinti, le installazioni, le sculture, le foto e i video permettono al pubblico di partecipare attivamente a questa idea di arte.

Sicuramente da vedere…un salto dal passato al presente che lascia il visitatore senza fiato!

Continue reading »]]> Recently my wife and I celebrated our wedding anniversary. For the special occasion, we decided to dine at “Celestino”, a traditional Florentine restaurant in the historic center, a few steps from Ponte Vecchio and Palazzo Pitti.

The restaurant is in a historic building, known as the Torre degli Ubriachi (Tower of Drunks). The rooms’ historic vaulted ceilings are spectacular with splendid original frescoes.

The Celestino restaurant goes way back, all the way to 1872! It is located in Piazza Santa Felicita, next to the church of the same name, famous for its beautiful frescoes by Pontormo (perhaps you can admire them before dinner) and for being the church overlooked by the windows of the Vasari Corridor.

The candles on the tables make the atmosphere really charming, perfect for our romantic dinner !

The skilled maître, Mr. Bruno, with many years experience behind him, recommended some excellent dishes such as reginette pasta with slices of tomato and oregano and the traditional Florentine-steak with cannellini beans with oil. Delicious!

If you don’t want meat, don’t worry, they also have seafood dishes.

Their wine cellar is also very well stocked with wines from different Italian regions.

On warm summer evenings, Celestino offers an inviting outdoor space for dining al fresco, amidst the places of Florentine history.

A little, fun extra: on request, you can have a free ride to and from the hotel on a classic, Italian three-wheel vehicle, Ape Piaggio!

Continue reading »]]> Recentemente mia moglie ed io abbiamo festeggiato il nostro anniversario di matrimonio. Per questa occasione speciale abbiamo deciso di cenare da “Celestino”, un ristorante tipico fiorentino in pieno centro storico, a due passi dal Ponte Vecchio e da Palazzo Pitti.

Il ristorante è ospitato in un edificio storico, all’interno della torre degli Ubriachi. Sugli antichi soffitti a volta di una delle sale fanno bella mostra di sé dei meravigliosi affreschi originali.

Il ristorante Celestino ha origini davvero antiche, che risalgono al 1872! Si trova in Piazza Santa Felicita, di fianco all’omonima chiesa, famosa per i begli affreschi del Pontorno (magari prima di cena potete andare ad ammirarli) e per essere la chiesa sulla quale si affacciano le finestre del Corridoio Vasariano.

Le candele sui tavoli rendono l’atmosfera davvero suggestiva, perfetto per la nostra cena romantica!

Il competente maître, il Sig. Bruno, forte dei suoi tanti anni di esperienza, ci ha consigliato degli ottimi piatti come ad esempio le reginette con filetti di pomodoro e origano e la tipica bistecca alla fiorentina con i fagioli cannellini all’olio. Una delizia!

Se non volete la carne, non temete: hanno anche piatti di pesce, come si vede dalla foto in apertura, con degli ottimi gamberi.

Anche la cantina è fornitissima di vini provenienti da diverse regioni italiane.

Nelle calde serate estive, Celestino offre un invitante spazio all’esterno, per cenare al fresco, immersi nei luoghi della storia di Firenze.

Un piccolo “plus” molto divertente: su richiesta è possibile avere un servizio gratuito di accompagnamento da e per l’hotel sullo storico “calessino” Ape Piaggio!

Continue reading »]]> A few days ago I went with my 9-year-old daughter to the “Museo dei Ragazzi” (Kid’s Museum) located inside Palazzo Vecchio, in the very center of Florence.
It’s not a museum in the regular sense. It’s a series of activities, routes, and guided tours in the Palazzo covering the building’s different historical eras from its creation on. It is suitable for adults and families with children four years and up.

Reservations are required by phone or email as the activities have a set schedule. They are available in English and French, as well as Italian.
My daughter chose, “Fresco Painting“.
Ah! A little piece of advice for anyone choosing this activity. Don’t have your kids wear their finest as it’s a messy undertaking. Maybe bring an old T-shirt to put over their clothes.

You have to get there at least 15 minutes before the set schedule. After having bought the ticket (€2.00 for children, and €6.50+2.00 for adults), we met our teacher, a very sweet woman named Domiziana and her assistant Maria. After welcoming us in a room, they made a short, 15-minute introduction about the meaning of fresco painting and how it was conceived and done in the days of Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. I can tell you for sure that all the kids were transfixed.
Then, kids and adults together were gathered around a table where they passed out tiles with fresh plaster on which to paint. At the center of the table there were jars of tempera paint in different colors from plant and mineral sources, brushes of all sizes, and trays of clean water to be shared by all participants.

I helped my daughter, who couldn’t decide what to paint. Maria gave her a little suggestion and got her started on her painting. E voila’! My daughter was thrilled by the experience and said she wants to go back to do another activity. The whole thing lasted an hour and 15 minutes.

I liked it a lot too, but I have to admit that I was sorry that I hadn’t taken my own tile!
I suggest you grown ups take one too. It’s really fun!

Continue reading »]]> Qualche giorno fa con mia figlia che ha 9 anni siamo andate al “Museo dei Ragazzi” che si trova all’interno di Palazzo Vecchio il cuore della Citta’ di Firenze.
Non e’ un vero e proprio museo, ma sono molteplici attivita’, percorsi e visite guidate all’interno del Palazzo, che ripercorrono le diverse epoche storiche del’edificio a partire dalla sua nascita, adatte sia agli adulti che alle famiglie con bambini dai 4 anni.

La prenotazione e’ obbligatoria, o per telefono o per mail, perche’ le diverse attivita’ hanno un calendario prestabilito e sono disponibili anche in inglese in francese oltre che in italiano.
Mia figlia ha scelto, “Dipingere in Fresco”.
Ah! Un piccolo consiglio se decidete di scegliere questa attivita’ non vestite bene i vostri figli, perche’ ci si “imbratta”. Magari portatevi una maglietta piu’ vecchia da mettere sopra ai vestiti.

Bisogna presentarsi almeno 15 minuti prima dell’orario prestabilito e dopo aver fatto il biglietto ( €2,00 per i bambini, e €6,50+2,00 per gli adulti) abbiamo incontrato la nostra insegnante, una ragazza carinissima di nome Domiziana e la sua aiutante Maria le quali dopo averci fatto accomodare in una stanza, hanno fatto una breve introduzione per i primi 15 minuti sul significato di dipingere in fresco e soprattutto come veniva pensato e realizzato al tempo di Leonardo Da Vinci e di Michelangelo. I bambini vi posso assicurare che sono rimasti tutti a bocca aperta.
Dopodiche’ tutti insieme adulti e bambini ci siamo disposti intorno ad un tavolo, dove ci hanno distribuito le mattonelle con sopra l’intonaco fresco sul quale dipingere. Al centro del tavolo c’erano barattoli di tempere di vari colori estratti da vegetali e minerali, pennelli e pennelini, vaschette con acqua fresca, da condividere con tutti i partecipanti.

Io ho aiutato mia figlia, che era veramente indecisa su cosa dipingere, poi Maria dopo un piccolo consiglio, e’ riuscita a farla partire con il suo dipinto. E voila’! Mia figlia e’ rimasta super contenta di questa esperienza e ha detto che vuole tornarci per fare un’altra attivita’. Il tutto e’ durato 1 ora e 15 minuti.

Devo dire che e’ piaciuto molto anche a me pero’ devo confessare che mi sono pentita di non aver preso anch’io la mia mattonella personale!
Vi consiglio di prenderne una anche voi adulti e’ veramente divertente!

Continue reading »]]> Winetown is returning to Florence for its fourth edition on Friday, May 17 and Saturday May 18, 2013. Dedicated to the world of wine, the event will take place in various squares and historical buildings throughout Florence.
Some of these buildings are not normally open to the public but will open their doors for these two days—an event highlight brought back by popular demand.

Wine tastings will be held in magnificent inner courtyards featuring the stands of some of the best wine producers in Tuscany and beyond. The €15 Wine Card will let you choose freely among several different wines.
There will also be live music by internationally renowned Italian musicians and theatrical street performances.

You can drink excellent wine while listening to high-quality live music and watching short performances. Even if you don’t drink, you can still go inside the historical buildings to admire their beautiful artistic decoration, enjoy the music and leave, without paying a thing!
But no doubt the temptation to taste some first-rate Chiantis and Brunellos will prove too great resist!

A few words on the concerts:
On Friday, May 17 the ENRICO RAVA QUINTET will perform twice (at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.) in the courtyard of Palazzo Pitti with Enrico Rava on trumpet, Gianluca Petrella on trombone, Giovanni Guidi on piano, Fabrizio Sferra on drums, and Gabriele Evangelista on double bass. For the uninitiated, Rava is undoubtedly one the most famous Italian Jazz musicians in the world.
Also not-to-be-missed is the VALDARNO JAZZ ENSEMBLE performing at 9:30 p.m. in the Loggia del Grano (behind the Uffizi) with Daniele Malvisi on sax, Gianmarco Scaglia on double bass, Fabrizio Mocata on piano and Giovanni Paolo Liguori on drums.
The genre will change on Saturday with a performance by the CHE! TANGO PROJECT, also in the Loggia del Grano, featuring tangos, milongas, chacareras, zambas and candombes for an evening of music and dancing.

You can also check out different street performers like the “living music box” woman, a “human ball”, and a contortionist, and some who incorporate various objects into their acts like fans, hats, cages, knives and much more.
Last but not least: the food! Street-food stands will be set up for on-the-fly tastings and demonstrations by important chefs, alongside proper tastings (for a fee) of chocolate and rare vintages.

Continue reading »]]> A Firenze torna per il 4° anno Winetown, la manifestazione dedicata al mondo del vino, che occuperà le piazze principali e i palazzi storici di Firenze. Secondo una formula vincente, anche quest’anno alcuni palazzi del centro storico, normalmente non accessibili al pubblico, apriranno le loro porte per 2 giorni: venerdì 17 e sabato 18 maggio 2013.

Nelle splendide corti interne ci saranno stand con produttori di vino per assaggiare i migliori vini toscani (e non solo). Acquistando una Wine Card da 15 € si avrà diritto a diversi assaggi a libera scelta.

Ma non è finita qui! Oltre al vino, ci sarà la musica dal vivo, grazie alla presenza di artisti di fama nazionale e internazionale e il teatro, grazie a spettacoli di artisti di strada.

Così che sarà possibile bere ottimo vino, ascoltando musica dal vivo di grande qualità e assistendo a piccoli spettacoli teatrali. E se uno non vuole bere, può entrare comunque nei palazzi, ammirare le bellezze artistiche e storiche, godersi la musica e uscire, senza pagare nulla!
Ma siamo sicuri che la tentazione di assaggiare qualcuno degli ottimi vini sarà tanta.. e alla fine non potrete non bervi un ottimo Chianti o Brunello!

Qualche anticipazione sui concerti?

Nel cortile di Palazzo Pitti venerdì 17 maggio ci sarà una doppia performance (ore 19.00 e 21.30) dell’ENRICO RAVA QUINTET con Enrico Rava (tromba), Gianluca Petrella (trombone), Giovanni Guidi (piano), Fabrizio Sferra (batteria), Gabriele Evangelista (contrabbasso). Per chi non lo conoscesse, è indubbiamente il jazzista italiano più conosciuto a livello internazionale.
Da non perdere anche presso la Loggia del Grano (dietro gli Uffizi) alle ore 21.30 il VALDARNO JAZZ ENSEMBLE con Daniele Malvisi (sax), Gianmarco Scaglia (contrabbasso), Fabrizio Mocata (piano) e Giovanni Paolo Liguori (batteria).
Sabato sera invece si cambia genere con CHE! TANGO PROJECT: tanghi, vals e milonghe, chacareras, zambas e candombe, per una serata da ascoltare e da ballare! Sempre alla Loggia del Grano.

Infine, ci saranno anche spettacoli teatrali di artisti di strada, come la donna carillon vivente, l’uomo palla, contorsioniste, spettacoli con ventagli e cappelli, con gabbie, con coltelli, e molto altro.

Infine, last but not least, ci sarà il cibo! Alcune isole di Street Food per assaggi e dimostrazioni al volo di grandi chef, a fianco di vere e proprie degustazioni (questa a pagamento) sul cioccolato e sui vitigni rari.

Continue reading »]]> The other day, I decided to go to Barberino Designer Outlet in Barberino in Mugello, between Florence and Bologna. My daughter had pointed out that her sneakers were just a wee-bit too tight! Feet grow fast when you’re twelve. These “tight spots” every month were getting expensive. Why not try shopping in an outlet?

At the Barberino Outlet (McArthurGlen) there are leading brands with 30% to 70% discount! It’s super easy to get there from Florence, taking highway A1 and exiting at Barberino. The outlet is right at the exit! It’s about a 30-40 minute trip from Florence. There are also shuttles at 10:00 AM and 2:30 PM from Florence in the station square and at 1:00 PM and 6:00 PM on the way back (tickets are €15).
This isn’t a usual indoor outlet store. Designed like a little village it has roads and bridges… and even a little river running through it!

As soon as we got there, we decided to go to the Puma store. Fabulous! One of the largest! It was well stocked and, most importantly, had low prices! Being a typical Florentine woman I started to cianare (= chat in the Tuscan dialect) with an excellent sales clerk named Simona, who told me that you get the best deals during sales. Incredible!! Even outlet stores have sales! The sales periods are after January 8 through to mid January and in the summer from July to end of August. Of course, they have felt the recession too, but they manage to keep on going with their steeply discounted prices.
I bought my daughter a very nice, comfortable pair of shoes, but best of all for me … I spent very little, which is especially great because … well, in a month no doubt we’ll have to come back!

We got good ice cream in one of the many food places here. At Ca’puccino, they make delicious homemade ice cream, fresh every day.

Inside the village are cafes, plus a restaurant called Il Torracchione.

Sure, because the outlet closes at 9:00 PM. What’s more, if your kids are whining, you can spend a half hour at a mini playground (free) and parents can rest for a while before getting back to their shopping sprees!

Continue reading »]]> L’altro giorno ho deciso di andare al Barberino Designer Outlet a Barberino di Mugello tra Firenze e Bologna, perché mia figlia mi ha fatto notare che le sue scarpe da ginnastica le stavano un tintinnino strette! A 12 anni il piede cresce velocemente e con questi chiari di luna ogni mese si spende. Perchè non provare a fare shopping in un outlet?

All’Outlet di Barberino (McArthurGlen) ci sono grandi firme a prezzi scontati dal 30%al 70%! Ci si arriva benissimo da Firenze prendendo l’autostrada A1 uscendo a Barberino. L’outlet è proprio all’uscita! Circa 30/40minuti di viaggio. Ci sono anche le navette alle 10.00 e alle 14.30 da Firenze piazza stazione e per il ritorno alle 13.00 e alle 18.00 (biglietto € 15).
Non é il solito outlet al chiuso, ma è stato realizzato come un piccolo villaggio, con strade e ponti.. nel mezzo scorre addirittura un piccolo fiume!!!

Appena arrivate abbiamo deciso di andare al negozio Puma. Bellissimo! Uno dei più grandi! Molto fornito e soprattutto prezzi bassi! Essendo una donna fiorentina mi sono messa a “cianare” (=chiaccherare in toscano) con una commessa bravissima, Simona, che mi ha detto che gli affari migliori si fanno nel periodo dei saldi. Incredibile!! Fanno i saldi anche all’outlet! I periodi sono dopo Befana fino a 1/2 gennaio e in estate da Luglio a fine Agosto. Certo anche loro hanno risentito della crisi ma riescono ad andare avanti lo stesso per i prezzi molto scontati.
Ho comprato a mia figlia un paio di scarpe molto carine e comode ma la cosa migliore per me…ho speso veramente poco anche perchè…tra un mese ci risiamo e ci ritornerò!

 Ci siamo prese un buon gelato in uno dei tanti posti ristoro che ci sono. Al Ca’puccino fanno un gelato buonissimo artigianalmente e quindi fresco tutti i giorni.

All’interno del villaggio ci sono non solo i bar ma anche un ristorante Il Torracchione.

Si, perchè l’outlet chiude alle 21.00. Inoltre se i bimbi fanno i capricci si può passare una mezzoretta al mini parco giochi (gratuito) e i genitori si possono riposare un po’ prima di ricominciare lo shopping sfrenato!
