“Al Fresco” restaurant

As the days are growing longer and warmer, it feels great to be outdoors. So I decided to invite an old friend to dine out and the surest-bet was the wonderful terrace of Grand Hotel Minerva's "Al Fresco" restaurant! We were kindly offered glasses of prosecco by the friendly staff who brought us the menu to have something to pass the time while making our selection. The menu is easy to read and perfect for summer. The selection is varied yet simple (this is how I like my menus, as it lets you zoom right in on the most lip-smacking dishes). For an appetizer I chose the fresh beef

Grand Hotel Minerva’ new rooms

There have been a lot of new happenings here at the Grand Hotel Minerva in the last couple years. Little by little, we've been giving ourselves a make-over. First we redid the entire top-floor terrace, including the area around the swimming pool and our new 360° roof bar, opened last summer. If you follow us on the social networks or our blog, you'll have noticed some pictures of our "Time4tapas" happy hour.

Between late 2014 and early 2015 we decided to remodel one

Exhibition: “Power and Pathos: Bronze Sculpture of the Hellenist World.”

The Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi has opened another fascinating exhibition called "Power and Pathos: Bronze Sculpture of the Hellenist World," open until June 21, 2015.

The exhibition tells the story of artistic developments in the Hellenist age, from the 4th to 1st centuries BCE, achieved through the use of bronze, which made it possible to create dynamic, full-figure statues and bring naturalism to their portraits, focusing on psychological expression. Statues of gods, athletes,

Lunching with the chef

Having accepted the invitation we received from the Lorenzo de' Medici (LdM) cooking school in Florence, at 1:00 pm on a Friday, I headed to the upper floor of the Mercato Centrale to take part in its “A pranzo con lo Chef” [Lunch with the chef] class.

We went into the kitchen where the courses are held at 16 stations for students and the chef behind the big counter in front. A video camera positioned above the counter records each step for making each recipe. The images are

Taste 2015: Recap

The Taste fair, in its tenth year, has comes to a close once again. For three days (March 7 to 9), Stazione Leopolda was bustling with 320 exhibitors from around the world. This year was once again a booming success and well attended. A spectacular installation greeted visitors at Stazione Leopolda's entrance, designed by Vetreria Etrusca (which also did the interiors), featuring 1,000 glass bottles lighting the fair's many stands. A wonderful installation was also seen at the culinary book

Touring Florence’s Cathedral

I recently had the chance to try out three tours organized by CAF Tour & Travel and learn about exceptional, little-known places in Florence's magnificent Cathedral, Baptistery and Sculptors' Workshop. These tours revealed places in Florence I hadn't even imagined existed! All three tours showed a short film about Florence during the Renaissance, an explanation of the changes and improvements wrought over the centuries by important sculptors and artists who contributed to making our
